You are a part of a team of investigators who will propose the location of the games based on what the country you select can contribute to the world. There will be other investigators competing with you who think they have a better location for the games. It is up to you to persuade the judges and win their vote for your country. G.R.A.P.E.S. To help the Olympic committee make their selection, they have requested that each investigator present their campaign using the G.R.A.P.E.S. model. For each letter you will need to come up with a significant achievement your country can teach the world. As an example, a former host country Japan, will be done for you. Geographical- Japan consists of several thousands of islands, of which Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku are the four largest. Japan's closest neighbors are Korea, Russia and China. It is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean off of the coast of China. The geography of Japan allows the Olympic games to be located on any of the four main islands. Be sure to explain how the geography of your country will affect where the people live and where the games will be taking place. You may also talk about how technology has changed where people settle in your country (building roads, etc.) Religion- Shinto is a religion that is native to Japan. Many people who follow the Shinto religion will visit shrines where they honor their ancestors and their history. The presence of Shintoism in Japan will encourage all athletes and tourists to remember their own history to know where they came from, and to make sure they do not repeat mistakes of the past. How does this relate to your country’s culture? Artistic or Achievements- Japanese Kabuki Theater is a style of theater that originated in Japan at the start of the 1600s. Kabuki Theater uses life size puppets, and actors with masks or thick make-up to tell a story. It is the most popular of the traditional styles of Japanese theater, and today, many of its most famous actors also appear in Japanese TV shows and movies. Despite almost dying out after World War II, it’s continued popularity helps inspire athletes and tourists to continue doing what they love. Remember to address how your country’s culture defines them as a people group and makes them different from other groups in the world. Political – Japan’s system of government is called a “constitutional monarchy.” In this system, there are three branches of government (legislative, judicial, and executive, similar to the United States), and an emperor, who similar to the Queen of England, has a mostly ceremonial role. Japan’s government was established in a new constitution written after the end of World War II. Because of the three branches of government, it is much easier for Japan to make sure no unfair laws are passed and that peoples’ basic human rights are not taken away during and after the Olympics. Describe your country’s government and who holds the power. Economy- Much of Japan’s economy is based on its strength in the electronics and automotive industries. Because of this, Japan has the third largest economy in the world. Japan’s strong economy means it has the money to build state of the art facilities and stadiums, as well as having a very good system of roads and trains to help get athletes and visitors where they need to go. How do the business and trade of other countries affect your country’s economy? Social- The most famous social group to come from Japan is the ancient “samurai.” The samurai were a group of warriors present in Japan for almost 1,000 years. Though the samurai as a group largely disappeared from Japan in the late 1800s when Japan decided to have a more modern military, some of the basic practices and influences of the samurai, which is a lifestyle devoted to discipline and perfection in everything, is still present in Japanese culture. As a result, Japan’s planning of the Olympics is sure to be perfect! How does this relate to your country’s culture?
